Click2Houston: Device may one day help babies with hydrocephalus

Babies born premature are at risk of developing hydrocephalus. According to the NIH, about 15% need surgery to implant a shunt but sometimes that surgery is unsuccessful or unnecessary.

To better understand what’s happening inside the brain, local doctors have developed a cap called a cap-based transcranial optical tomography (CTOT) that can help them see what’s happening inside the head.

When five-year-old Aries was born at 23-weeks gestation, his mother knew they would have challenges to face. She said if they had something like CTOT to see fluid inside of his brain, it would’ve made things easier on their family.

SECC Receives National Demonstration School Designation

Earlier this month, Principal Twyla Hynes of Stafford Early Childhood Center (SECC) received a notice detailing the exciting news that her campus had received the honor of being named a “2023 National Demonstration School” by the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE). This national distinction is awarded to an elite group of campuses in recognition of their achievements in instruction, diversity, as well as family and community involvement.

The National Demonstration Schools Collaborative is meant to bring together schools across the nation at all levels who have reached exemplary success while serving diverse student populations. A team of leaders from the campus will attend NABSE’s 51st Annual Conference to not only present best practices of the campus to education stakeholders from across the United States, but to also receive an award at the Dr. Deborah Wolfe Awards Banquet on December 2nd.
