Congratulations, Dr. LaTonya Goffney on your recent installation as the 24th President of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE). May your reign be one full of great achievement and advancement for yourself and the organization as a whole.

Dr. Roni Dean Burren was the first Black woman leader in ELAR I’d ever seen in my career when we first met in 2022. Her passing is like losing the sister you always wanted to be. All I can say right now is thank you, Roni, for being all that you were. Boldly and unapologetically, Roni.

Being nominated for Texas Mother of the Year is an opportunity that I don’t take for granted, as it brings so much visibility to moms of disabled dependents. Our stories of triumph deserve to be amplified not only for the sake of our own representation, but for those who hold very limited exposure to the realities of special needs parenting.

📖What I’m Reading📖
The most trusted guide to school culture, updated with current challenges and new solutions Shaping School Culture is the classic guide to exceptional school leadership, featuring concrete guidance on influencing the subtle symbolic features of schools that provide meaning, belief, and faith. Written by renowned experts in the area of school culture, this book tackles the increasing challenges facing public schools and provides clear, candid suggestions for more effective symbolic leadership. This new third edition has been revised to reflect the reality of schools today, including the increased emphasis on high-stakes testing, federal reforms such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), state sponsored improvement programs, and other major issues that impact organizational culture and the role of school leaders. Each chapter features new examples and cases that illustrate persistent problems, spelling out key cultural implications and offering concrete examples of overcoming the challenges while maintaining a meaningful learning environment.
Bestselling author and award-winning educator Baruti K. Kafele is known for his insight into leadership practices and his focus on deep reflection as a way to become a more effective school leader. In this thought-provoking book, he turns his attention to instructional leadership—a crucial, complex, and sometimes neglected facet of leading a school. Kafele contends that the primary purpose of supervising teachers is to help them continue to improve in the classroom so that all students have the support and skills they need to succeed. For principals and assistant principals, in particular, it is easy to be so inundated by the noninstructional aspects of the work that the instructional side—including instructional coaching—suffers. This has an adverse effect on the entire school. Just as the quality of teaching directly affects student outcomes, there is also a direct correlation between instructional leadership and student achievement and well-being.
Leadership development consultant Michael Timms has discovered three powerful habits that not only make one a better leader, but also encourage those they lead to take greater accountability themselves. Using a compelling combination of teaching principles and illustrations backed by loads of scientific studies, Timms reveals three habits of personal accountability that are easy to implement and which can instantly begin transforming positional leaders into true leaders who inspire everyone to take more accountability for results.
